Pit Bull Terrier - Medium - Young - Male - Dog - Polo
Description
My name is Polo. I am a friendly 18 month old pit bull terrier mix with beautiful white and brindle markings. I was found as a stray wandering the streets and if you had seen the way I was treated at my old home, you would know why I wanted to escape. I was left out in the yard without a roof over my head and was given little to no food which is why I was so skinny. Even in the dead of winter my owners wouldnt let me inside no matter how much my skinny little bones were shaking. Well one day I finally escaped and jumped the fence. Luckily a volunteer for Recycled Love found me and took me in but that was just the beginning of my journey. After going to the vet, the doctor found out I had a heart murmur. They sent me to a canine cardiologist who discovered that I had a congenital heart defect that was causing my murmur. My pulmonary artery, which takes blood from my heart to my lungs to get oxygen is not as big as it should be. For the most part this doesnt really bother me, but if it is really hot outside or if I am getting a lot of strenuous exercise then I cannot get as much oxygen to my body as other dogs. My owners have to keep a close eye on me and be careful that I dont pass out in these situations. As I grow older, I will have to see the cardiologist on occasion to make sure my condition is stable. I am not on any special medication but I do need my teeth cleaned regularly and require special care if I get a wound infection so that the infection doesnt spread to my heart. I have been doing great in my foster home with two female pit-bulls. I get two meals a day and have filled out nicely. It took me a while to warm up to my sisters because I was never socialized as a puppy so when I meet new dogs I am very nervous. The city also scares me a little bit because there is so much going on. My foster parents work with me every day to condition me to the busy city and are working on distraction techniques to keep me from getting overwhelmed around other dogs. Right now I have to wear a muzzle when I walk outside due to my fear, but they hope that eventually I can lose the muzzle in exchange for a gentle leader. I would probably do best in a country home where there are fewer distractions and there is plenty of room to play. A home with another dog would be fine, but I would have to be slowly introduced to any other dog so that I would not be nervous around them. An owner with previous experience with a bully breed would probably be best. That being said, I get along great with my two sisters and despite having a lot of energy, I seem to understand my playing limits. Some of my favorite things to do are chew on nyla-bones and wrestle with my foster sisters. When all the fun is over though, I am a real love bug who will snuggle up with you on the couch. I am completely crate trained and I love to sleep in there when my foster parents are away or during the night. I am also completely house trained and know all my basic obedience. I would make a great addition to the right home and I hope that someone out there can offer such a place for me.
